Port Royal was dredged out of mangrove at the south tip of Naples starting in the late 1940s, when John Glen Sample cut deep canals and built peninsulas of fill so that every lot touched water. The first residents moved in around 1952. The roofs today are mostly on houses built since 2000, because the original 1950s and 1960s homes have been torn down one by one for larger estates, and nearly all of the new ones carry flat or barrel concrete tile with a few in standing-seam metal.
The neighborhood is surrounded by Naples Bay, Gordon Pass, and the Gulf, and Ian's surge on September 28, 2022, came in from every side at once. Ground floors and garages flooded on Gordon Drive and the finger streets, and roofs facing the pass took sustained wind with nothing to break it.
This site connects Port Royal homeowners with an independent local roofing contractor by phone. It does not perform the work.
A Port Royal roof is big, often with several ridges and valleys and multiple flat sections over lanais, and a roof repair usually starts at a valley or a flat-to-tile transition. Tile from a 2000s build is now at the age where underlayment is the question, and the tile roofing page covers the lift-and-relay path that keeps the original tile. Storm damage after a named storm is a storm damage roofing job with documentation for a claim on a high-value policy.
The Port Royal Property Owners Association reviews exterior changes, and a re-roof in a new material or color goes through it before the City of Naples issues the permit.
