Immokalee is the farm town in the northeast corner of Collier County, 35 miles from the coast, where tomatoes, peppers, and citrus have been grown since the early 1900s. The housing is the oldest and most varied in the county: 1940s and 1950s frame and block homes near Main Street, 1960s and 1970s block ranches under shingle, mobile home parks, and newer subsidized and Habitat-built homes with shingle or metal roofs. Tile is uncommon.
Irma hit Immokalee harder than any storm in living memory. On September 10, 2017, wind tore roofs off homes and mobile homes across town; at least 65 homes were destroyed, 44 of them mobile homes, and more than a thousand had damage above 60 percent of their value. Tarps stayed on for a long time, and some roofs were never properly rebuilt. Ian in 2022 was a wind and rain event here.
