Lely is two different places with one name. Lely Golf Estates, off Rattlesnake Hammock Road, was started in 1974 and built out over three decades with about 460 single-family homes and condos under concrete tile and some shingle. Lely Resort, south of it along Collier Boulevard, was conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelius van der Lely, who bought 25,000 acres in 1972; its three golf courses went in during the 1990s and Stock Development took the project over in 2001. Lely Resort's villages are concrete tile in approved profiles, built between about 1990 and 2015.
Inland and slightly elevated, Lely took wind from Ian on September 28, 2022, rather than surge. The 1990s tile roofs in both Lely Resort and the Golf Estates are at underlayment age, and the roofs that leaked after Ian were almost all roofs whose felt had already dried out.
